A court hearing has been scheduled for the Port Sanilac man seeking a personal protection order against the local police chief.

John Kelke's petition for a P.P.O. against Port Sanilac Chief Rod Jaskowski will be heard Jan. 14 by Huron County Judge Richard Knoblock in Bad Axe.

Knoblock denied Kelke's petition for an immediate P.P.O. on Dec. 18, because he saw no immediate threat to the man by delaying the matter until a court hearing could be scheduled.

Kelke claims he's been harassed and threatened by the chief since he built a fence on his property in Port Sanilac. In his petition, he claims when he attempted to enter a closed meeting of the village council on Dec. 11, to discuss his complaints against police, he was assaulted by the chief and other officers, and then arrested for assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and destroying police property. Kelke claims in the petition that he needs the personal protection order because he's afraid the chief will "again assault, injure and imprison me because of this action, and because I intend to initiate action against him and his officers for police misconduct."

On Dec. 18, the village council issued a statement for the press stating that Kelke was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer on Dec. 12 (not Dec. 11), while a council meeting was being held to hear citizen complaints against police.

Council also voted on Dec. 18 to take "no disciplinary action at this time for any police officer involved" in Kelke's arrest on Dec. 12.
