19 apply for Scholar-Athlete Award



EAST LANSING – A total of 19 high school student-athletes from Sanilac County have completed applications for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award for 2007-08.

To be eligible to apply for the yearly award, a student must be a senior that will graduate in the 2007-08 school year, have earned a varsity letter prior to this school year in an MHSAA sponsored sport, and own a 3.5 or better Grade Point Average.

Along with filling out the application, the student must have two letters of recommendation and write a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

After selecting finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award, a panel of judges chosen by the MHSAA will name the 32 winners, who will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The Scholar-Athlete Program is underwritten by Farm Bureau Insurance. All winners will then be honored during the Boys Basketball State Finals on Saturday, March 15 at the Breslin Center, MSU, in East Lansing.

Applicants from Sanilac County schools are: Brown City – Krislene Dye; CPS – Jordan Alexander; Croswell-Lexington – Erin Lamb, Derek Sheridan, Justin Walls, Kathleen Wilson; Deckerville – Katelyn Stutterheim, Ashley Szymanski; Marlette – David Bliss, Kelsey Hall, Caitlin King, Jenna Lange, Corey Nepper, and Jacob Spinks; Peck – Michael Mann, Kayla O'Connor, Shawna York; Sandusky – Monica Chambers, Michael Schwind.

In addition 13 more student-athletes from the Sanilac area have submitted applications: Cass City – Isaiah Battle, Madeline Dooley, Mark Koepf; Harbor Beach – Brittany Braun, Brett Buchholz; Kingston – Joshua Campbell, Kristi Phillips, Sarah Vroman; North Branch – Rebekah Byers, Colleen Cross, Jessica Daniel, Kierstyn Schulte; Ubly – Jason Kubacki, Shelby Lemke; Shannon Weber; Yale – Aaron Zimmerman.
