DeMott, VanConant lead Lady ‘Skins to 69-51 win

SANDUSKY – Coming into the season, everyone knew Sandusky had two talented scoring threats in Marissa DeMott and Cassy VanConant. The two turned in their best combined effort of the season Friday night to lead the Lady Redskins to a resounding, 69-51, triumph over Harbor Beach.

Sandusky had been idle since suffering their only loss of the season, an overtime setback to Marlette in the third week of December. The Lady ‘Skins, defending division champions, are now 2-1 in the GTC East and 8-1 on the season. Harbor Beach suffered its first division loss (1-1) and is now 5-2 overall.

"It seemed like forever since we've played, especially after that loss to Marlette," said veteran Sandusky coach Al DeMott. "We've had that bad taste in our mouth for a long time. We had to redeem ourselves."

Marissa DeMott, a sophomore guard, and VanConant, a 6'2" senior post, helped make sure of the redemption by combining for 39 points and also being factors in every other phase of the game. DeMott netted 20 points and added five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. Meanwhile, VanConant tossed in 19 points and had six rebounds, three assists and four blocks.

"Those two had good all-around games and they led the way," cited Coach DeMott. "They had 10 assists between them, too, so when they were double-teamed, they had to get the ball to others, and the other girls made the shots."

Sandusky led 15-7 after a quarter and 35-24 at halftime and were in control the entire night. DeMott added, though, that two other starters delivered key plays in the second quarter. He explained, "Harbor Beach put a chaser on Marissa in the second quarter and Lauren Armstrong and Monica Chambers both hit big threes...within a minute or so of each other."

Armstrong also finished with seven rebounds for the Lady ‘Skins, who actually had all 10 players score.
