State police troopers from the Sandusky Post are investigating the crash that occurred Jan. 24 at approximately 4:05 p.m. on French Line Road near Town Line Road.

Troopers reported that George Riggs, 79, of Sandusky was eastbound on French Line, slowing to turn north onto Town Line, when his Ford was struck from behind by the bus.

The bus driver, RonaldWebb Jr., 43, of Sandusky was unable to stop the bus, and the impact from the collision caused the Ford to travel northeast off the roadway and collide with the ditch.

Riggs' 16-year-old grandson, Bradley Riggs, riding in the backseat, was transported to McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky, airlifted to Covenant Cooper in Saginaw, and later transferred to U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor where he was listed in critical condition.

The grandfather and his front seat passenger, Matthew Riggs, 15, were taken to Marlette Regional Hospital. The boy was treated and released, while the grandfather was admitted for observation.

Webb and his two children on the bus– Jeremy, 9, and Brianna, 6 - were not injured. There were no students on the bus.

The bus driver has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation, said Sgt. Barbara Soffin from the Sandusky Post.

Soffin said roads were snow-covered at the time of the crash.

Troopers Andy Feehan and Andy Pflaum were assisted at the scene by the Sandusky Fire Department, Marlette and Croswell EMS, troopers from the Lapeer State Police Post, a motor carrier officer from Caro, a vehicle inspector from the Lapeer Post and an accident reconstructionist from state police district headquarters.
