BUEL TWP. -It was one of those "see your life flashing before your eyes" moments.

Five Croswell firefighters were on their way back to the station in a fire truck about 8:25 p.m. during last Wednesday's bad snowstorm when an approaching car started fishtailing.

"We were about three to four miles east of Peck on M-90 (near Hamilton Road) and the car coming toward us lost control and went broadside right in front of us...Todd (Thibodeau, truck driver) did a remarkable job. It happened so quick," stated Fire Chief Tom Dickensheets.

"Todd tried to get around him...It was a good thing there was no traffic coming. He (Thibodeau) went to the left, to the right was a big ditch. If he hadn't been able to get around, we would have rolled right over the car."

As it was, Dickensheets said the fire truck hit the car's back quarter panel and spun it around. The car then hit the truck's rear quarter panel causing the truck to slide down the road, and the car went into the ditch.

"After we hit him, we were headed toward the ditch. Todd kept the truck from going in the ditch, but we thought we were going to flip," he recalled.

After Thibodeau brought the fire truck to a stop, he backed it up.

"We rendered aide, and put the lights on and directed traffic until the (state) police were able to get there," Dickensheets stated.

No one was injured. Dickensheets said he and Thibodeau, Lt. Rob Bennatts, and firefighters Mike O'Vell and Mike McMillan all had their seat belts on. The fire truck sustained major damage, but is still usable.

The state police ticketed the driver of the car, Roger Craig, 21 of Croswell, for driving too fast for conditions.
