Deckerville considers options

DECKERVILLE - What's the best way to run Deckerville Schools in the future? Could one person handle the duties of superintendent, elementary principal and high school principal? How about a combination superintendent and elementary principal, or superintendent and high school principal?

These are some of the options considered during Monday's special meeting of the Deckerville Board of Education, which is planning for the June retirements of Superintendent Alan Broughton and Elementary Principal Richard Walker.

Dr. Tim Edwards, superintendent of the Sanilac Intermediate School District, led the discussion with the Deckerville board. Three main ideas were discussed about reorganizing administrative duties. However, no final decision was reached, and the discussion is expected to continue at the next regular meeting on Saturday, Feb. 25.

"A lot of discussion," said Superintendent Broughton. "Really, no decisions. They talked about several options...but didn't narrow it down. They're talking about the pros and cons."

Here are the options:

*Superintendent and K-12 Principal - one person to run the district with the assistance of a budget coordinator and a lead teacher in the elementary and junior-senior high.

*Eliminate one administrator - the combinations include a part-time superintendent and part-time K-4 elementary principal plus a full-time high school principal for grades 5-12 and a full-time technology director. Or, a part-time superintendent and part-time high school principal grades 9-12, along with a full-time elementary principal for grades K-8 and a full-time technology director.

*Maintain the status quo - full-time superintenden, elementary and high school principals and technology director.

The board also indicated it wants to pursue discussions with Sandusky, Carsonville-Port Sanilac and the ISD about consolidating some services, for example food service or transportation.
