Devils clinch East share with win over Mayville

Could lockup outright crown tonight

BROWN CITY - The Brown City Green Devils came into this season with back-to-back co-championships in GTC East boys hoops. They made it, at least, three in a row Friday night with a 70-58 win at home against the Mayville Wildcats.

Brown City, now 9-0 in the division and 14-1 overall, can wrap up its first outright title since 2004 tonight (Wednesday) with a victory at Harbor Beach. BC also has East games at home against Sandusky (Feb. 15) and Marlette (Feb. 21) to conclude the regular season. In between, the Devils visit Lakers on Feb. 19 in a GTC crossover contest.

Coach Tony Burton of Brown City did not want to dwell on the title share. He commented, "We got that out of the way. But, we've just got keep getting better."

Burton liked that his team built a 20-point lead against Mayville. He didn't like that the Wildcats clawed back within three early in the fourth quarter.

"We got a nice lead, but, all of a sudden, we flattened out....and Mayville stepped it up," added Burton. "In the last three minutes, though, we were able to put it back together."

The Devils led 45-28 at halftime, but them saw Mayville starting to cut into the margin in the third quarter, 53-42.

Turning a game back around can come a little easier when a team has three proven scorers. BC's Jack McPhail (20 points, including four triples), Donovan Ogboh (18) and A.J. Burton (16) combined 54 points.

Coach Burton likes that luxury. "When a team has one good scorer, you can work a defense around to stop him. When you have two good scorers, you can probably scheme a defense for both. But, when you have three guys that can score on a consistent level, it's tough to defend all of them."

Ogboh, a 6'2" senior forward, turned in another double-double for the Devils by collecting 11 rebounds. Ryan Groat and Jon Muxlow had six boards apiece.
