The Red Raiders, with five league champions, including MVP Jon Hayward, finished behind the Wildcats in the team standings and settled for an overall second place finish for the season. Mayville, which came into the meet unbeaten in the dual meet season, finished with 187.5 points while Marlette was next with 167.

"We were close, just not close enough," said Cal Hayward, Marlette coach. "We had nine kids place out of 10 we took, so I'm happy with that."

Senior Jon Hayward, a Division 4 State champion last season, was selected to receive the Rich Reed Memorial Award for league MVP. Hayward, now 39-3 and a top-ranked wrestler in the state at 119 pounds, took first at 125.

"The coaches voted him in.... and that was a nice honor," said Coach Hayward on the Reed Award.

Marlette had four other league champions including Jordan Hayward. The Raider junior (42-4) won his third straight GTC title, taking first at 140 pounds. Other league champs were freshman Justin Harms (21-10) at 103, sophomore Travis Noble (30-9) at 112 and senior Joel Swenson (29-11) at 145.

Brown City and Sandusky each had one champion on the day. Andre Sanson, a Green Devil senior, won his second straight GTC championship, taking first at 135 pounds. He recorded two pins and technical fall. Meanwhile, Bernie Marx, a Redskin junior, increased his record to 35-1 on the year. He scored an 11-8 decision over Mike Wechter of Saginaw Nouvel in the 152 pound title match.

Sandusky also had a second place finish at 285 pounds from sophomore Eric Maitland.

Marlette and Brown City will compete in the Division 4 Team District in Marlette tonight (Wednesday). Sandusky will be at the Laker District. All three schools will venture to the Division 4 Individual District at New Lothrop this Saturday.
