Corby remains unbeaten, Palleschi 2nd at Regionals

GOODRICH – Senior wrestler Donnie Corby of Cros-Lex is now just four steps away from accomplishing his main two goals this season. He'll get that chance in a little over a week from now at the Individual State Finals.

Corby raised his record to 53-0 on Saturday in winning the Division 3 Regional championship in the 140 pound weight class at Goodrich High School.

"He has said that his goals are to go undefeated and win a State championship," said Corby's coach, Joe Lilly. "He's said that he wanted to pressure (opponents) so much on the mat that they can't even breathe."

Corby, who has 192 career victories as a Pioneer, was a dominating force in his three wins at Goodrich. In the title match, he pinned Millington's John Osborn in 1:37. Osborn is 46-3 on the season with two of his losses coming to Corby.

Earlier in the day, Corby pinned Erie-Mason's Dillion Raymond in 2:44 and scored a technical fall, 16-1, over Joe Hopkins of Goodrich in the semis.

The Pioneers will also send Adam Palleschi to the State Finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills (Mar. 6-8). The C-L senior settled for second place at 215 pounds at Saturday's Regional when he was pinned by Dundee's Jimmy Rowe (53-2). Palleschi is now 45-2 on the year and both losses have been to Rowe.

"Jimmy's a tough, solid wrestler, who took 2nd place at State last year," noted Coach Lilly. "Adam wrestled him tough. It was 0-0 at the end of the first period....but then he got caught ....and Rowe put him down."

Palleschi won his opening match in a 16-0 tech fall and squeezed out a 4-2 decision in the semifinals over Don Whitehead of Otisville-Lakeville.

Two other Pioneer wrestlers did not fare as well. Junior Josh Torrez and senior Zach Fabian both wrestled at 160 pounds. Fabian, who finished 45-11 for the season, won his opening match and then lost Chris Eggert, eventual champion, and to Steve Tomaszewski, 4-3. Torrez lost two close decisions, including, 7-5, to Tomaczewski.
