The Pioneers, who clinched the BWAC title over two weeks ago and finished 14-0, became the first Cros-Lex boys basketball team to go undefeated in the regular season. “This was a dream season,” reflected Coach Don Roberts. “Some people go through their whole coaching career and do not experience something like this. “All the credit should go to the players,” he continued. “You couldn’t write a script any better as this turned out. And, this is terrific for the community, too.” The Chiefs, who were second in the league (9-5, 10-9), could not match the energy in the fan-crammed Pioneer gymnasium and the rout was on by halftime as C-L led by 23, 48-25. “The place was packed and they went crazy,” said Roberts. “Our student section was outstanding. By halftime of the JV game the place was jammed packed.” Some familiar defensive play got the Pioneers and their fans going early. “We used some full-court trap pressure and it really caused (Capac) a lot of problems. It was nothing different than what we’ve been doing for 20 games.” Roberts added, “The fact that we could do that for 20 games is amazing. We’ve had one poor half all season (at Marine City in early January).” Roberts, whose team led 70-37 after three quarters, had no problem getting all 17 of his players on the court, and 14 scored. Senior center Garrett Grundman led the way with 19 points and six rebounds, followed by senior guard Karl Kaufman with 17 points and seven steals. Also chipping in were Brandon Adams with 11 points, Gabe Lazurka with nine points and Andrew Foley with nine points, seven assists and five steals. The favorite two points of the night came in the closing seconds and caused a massive celebration on the floor. Roberts explained, “Derek Sheridan had a put-back at the buzzer that gave us the 90 points….and the place just exploded. It was a perfect exclamation point.” CROSWELL - There was no other focus all season for the Cros-Lex boys basketball team than to win the game at hand. After the 19th win was completed at Armada on Tuesday night, the Pioneers were right on target for school history. They ran the table Friday night, making it 20-0, in convincing style with their 90-49 romp over Capac.
