Sandusky attorney Gregory S. Ross, 53, has announced his candidacy for the non-partisan office. The incumbent, James Marcus, is not running for re-election.

Ross is the second candidate for the 73rd District Court bench. Sandusky lawyer Dennis Reid announced earlier. With two candidates, the contest will be held at the November General Election. However, a third candidate on the ballot would force a primary election in August.

A practicing attorney in Sanilac County for 28 years, Ross said the judgeship is "the next logical step in my career. But more than that, I am running to serve the people of Sanilac County, and looking forward to doing the best job I can for them."

Ross added, "I have a great deal of respect for Judge Marcus. He's done a good job. There won't be any wholesale changes (in the court)...I'm running to offer myself as judge, not on a platform to make changes."

Although the county's economic troubles could lead to cost cutting measures in the court if he were elected, Ross said, "I'm not going to make changes for the sake of making changes. The court is here to serve the people not the other way around. I want to provide services efficiently, professionally and courteously."

Ross is a graduate of Marlette High School, Central Michigan University and the T.M. Cooley Law School. He has a general practice, with an emphasis on criminal law. His professional associations include the State Bar of Michigan, Michigan Association for Justice, Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, and the Sanilac County Bar Association of which he is past president.

"I offer the voters of Sanilac County my experience, my highly regarded reputation, and my unquestioned independence and integrity," he said.

Ross resides in Sandusky with his wife, Dorothy, and three children, David, 12, Caroline, 9, and Annie, 3.
