There are now four Republican candidates running for the seat that is being vacated by Jim Bowerman, who has announced his retirement at the end of this term. Brian Williams of Palms, Bob McConnachie of Sanilac Township and Gregory Alexander of Carsonville have also filed.

Western, educated at Michigan Tech University, has been employed in the civil engineering sector for more than 20 years. "Beginning first with the county surveyor, valuable experience was gained with topographical surveys, and understanding property descriptions. Both critical skills in executing the duties of the drain commissioner," Western said.

He moved to Nicol Engineering, now Phillips Engineering of Sandusky as a civil tech and Cad manager.

"While working for the engineering firms, I have been involved with various drain commission projects up to eight miles in length. Also managing survey crews, working on drain easements, as well as right of ways," Western stated. "I am knowledgeable about the bidding documentation required of all county drains and have extensive experience with storm water, sanitary sewer, and detention/retention of storm water run off."

Western holds a storm water management certification through the Michigan Department of Water Quality.

Scott and wife of 17 years, Jill, have two children, Morgan and Austin. They reside in Applegate where, along with his parents Arthur and Charlotte, they own and operate Western's Tree Farm. The family attends St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Lexington. Scott is also a den leader for Pack 333 in Sandusky.

"Our current drain commissioner, Jim Bowerman, and his staff have put in place policies and procedures that have improved our county storm water network. I am clearly the best person for the job that will require the least amount of training. That will allow me to focus my experience and knowledge on cost effective policy and engineering of the drainage needs of the county."
