Lady Eagles race to title at own invitational meet

DECKERVILLE - Randee Kirkpatrick could not be more delighted in her Deckerville girls track team's performance Friday. The Lady Eagles easily captured the title at their own Deckerville Invitational track and field meet by scoring 208 points. Harbor Beach was a distant second, among six schools, with 115.

Deckerville had first place finishes in eight events and were second in 10.

"We are so excited about winning this invitational," said Kirkpatrick. "I knew we had a chance, but I didn't want to count on it. I was really pleased with the performances of these girls - they wanted it so badly, and they rose to the occasion."

Sophomore Dana Stolicker was the only Lady Eagle to be involved in four firsts in the meet. She won the 800 meter run (2:41), 400 meter dash (1:07.31) and was on the winning 3200 (11:10) and 1600 meter relay teams. Malorie Machart and Cheyenne Sampson were both on those two relay teams while Chelsea Szymanski ran a leg of the 3200 and Nicole Oswald was on the 1600.

"Dana had a great night in winning the 400 and 800," complimented Kirkpatrick. "Those two races are very close together and to win both is quite an accomplishment."

Another impressive showing came from freshman Shelby McVittie, who won the 3200 meter run (13:53) after finishing second in the 300 hurdles (52.7) and the 100 hurdles (18.6).

"Shelby proved her toughness," Kirkpatrick said. "Not too many hurdlers can run distance, but she is very versatile."

Deckerville's other firsts came from Tasha Trowhill in the shot put (30-11), Stephanie Oswald in the long jump (13-11), and the 800 relay squad of Katelyn Stutterheim, Nicole Oswald, Stephanie Oswald and Katelyn Salowitz.
