Are Lady Devils, Eagles destined to meet again?

Two of the top softball teams in the GTC East just met last week in an important twinbill. The same two -- Brown City and Deckerville -- could see each other again this Saturday.

The Lady Green Devils of Brown City swept Deckerville, 4-3 and 13-4, last Thursday. The Lady Eagles led in the second game until one bad inning turned it around.

Now, the two East rivals could see each other with a title at stake in this Saturday's Sanilac County Softball Tournament at CPS High School.

First things first. BC meets Sandusky in the 10 a.m. semifinals and the Lady Eagles take on host CPS in the 11:30 a.m. semi. The winners advance to the title game at 1 p.m.

Erin Snyder, coach of the Lady Green Devils, who have lost just once this season entering this week, isn't masking what she expects this Saturday, and the rest of the season.

"Last year we played well (GTC East co-champ, District champ), but this year, I think, we're capable of playing better," said Snyder. "One of our goals is to win the County, as well as the league and district. We want all three."

BC has thrived on the pitching of sophomore Kristen Greene and some sound defense. Against Deckerville, last week, the hitting came to life in the second-game rally.

Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles (7-6), who upset Marlette, defending champs, in the County qualifier, are longing for a County championship. They have not won the tournament since 1998.

"We're looking forward to the games at the County tournament -- we haven't won there like forever," said Christy Pavlovics, Deckerville coach. "Our goal is to win it. After last week, we know we can go toe-to-toe with Brown City."

Junior Jessie Guza matched BC's Greene pitch-for-pitch in last Thursday's opener until a pair of errors led the way to a three-run sixth inning. The Lady Eagles have shown they are an improved hitting team this season, too. However, they must back-up the pitching effort from Guza by playing sound defense behind her.

CPS and Sandusky both have young teams. The Lady Tigers have only two starters back from a year ago when they won a District title -- All-County infielder Jordan Alexander and catcher Emily Kress. Sandusky, meanwhile, has no seniors and just one junior on the squad. Maddie Hale, the junior, and Marissa DeMott, a sophomore, are the lone returning players from a year ago.
