Young Peck girls nab Dryden Inv. title

DRYDEN -- Coach Julia Cramer had to convince a young and inexperienced girls track team this spring that they could do more than they probably thought they could.

"It's something they have to find deep within themselves," said Cramer.

The Lady Pirates may have found that Friday night when they won the team championship at the Dryden Invitational.

Despite just three first-place finishes in the 17 events, Peck finished with 138.5 points and finished 15 points ahead of runner-up North Huron.

"We only had a few firsts, and we don't have people in four of the events," noted Cramer. "But, if you can take the seconds, thirds and fourths, you can still come up with something.

"It was an excellent meet for us," she added. "These girls have so much determination and they give everything they have."

Junior sprinter Antoinette Martin was involved in three of the Lady Pirates' three firsts. She won the 100 meter dash in a personal-best time of :13.05 and anchored the winning 800 relay team (2:02.44), joined by Kelsey Schell, Julia Bush, and Erin Navarro. Martin, Navarro, Shawna York and Jessica Bowsky comprised the 400 relay squad that turned in a third place and season-best time of :56.76.

Peck's only other winning performance came in the 1600 relay (5:07.29) from the foursome of Schell, Larissa Schneidewind, Shayna Bedy and Tina Daniels.
