The district is working to negotiate a contract with Johnson Controls of Saginaw for an energy retrofit. Options include rebuilding the high school boiler, replacing lighting in the high school and middle school gyms and high school cafeteria, replacing rooftop units, and controlling water usage with new fixtures.

Last week the school board authorized Superintendent Duane Lange to negotiate agreement details with suggestions from the building and grounds committee.

The school attorney is reviewing the contract language. The board will likely be presented with a final draft of the plan at their next board meeting.

Lange would not release information on cost and potential savings until the plan is finalized. He says the board hopes the majority of the work could be completed before school resumes in the fall.

In other recent business, the board:

*Heard the superintendent's plan to form a Facility Planning Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of evaluating building use. The superintendent says declining enrollment has left eight classrooms in the district's three buildings completely empty and five or six used for only one hour each day.

The committee of board members will work to gather staff and community input. They are slated to begin meeting in September and make a recommendation to the board in December.

*Approved changes in probationary status for the following teachers: 4th year probation- Melissa Findlay, Marcia Schwarck, Amy Smith, and Pam Gunderson, tenure- Shauna Lester, Beverly George, Nicole Remar, and Jill Thomas.

*Met in closed session for 35 minutes to discuss labor negotiations.

*Appointed Les King as the board's representative for the upcoming ISD budget hearing.

*Approved medical leave for special education teacher Marcia Schwarck from April 18 to May 30.
