Eyewitnesses have identified the motorist that struck the youngster during the evening hours of April 25 and then fled the scene, said Port Sanilac Police Chief Rod Jaskowski, whose department provides law enforcement services to Minden City.

The driver, an 18-year-old male from Ubly, allegedly admitted to the accident during a phone conversation with the chief. However, the teenager's father intervened and indicated they would no longer cooperate with the police and would seek an attorney, Jaskowski reported.

"He gave me no reason why he left, just admitted to the accident," the chief said.

Two eyewitnesses to the accident provided police with the identification. They were in separate cars near the accident scene. One of the witnesses is a female high school student from Bad Axe, who talked to the police liaison officer at her school and was told to contact Port Sanilac police. The second witness was the male driver of the car directly behind the vehicle that struck the boy, Jaskowski said.

The child was riding a bicycle on Third Street around 8 p.m., when he was struck by an older model four-door vehicle, green in color with a white sticker on the back window. A witness described the motorist as a male subject in his late teens to early twenties with dark hair and a large build.

The witness also advised that two other vehicles were observed stopped near the accident scene, but left before police arrived. One of the vehicles was red in color with a male driver, while the second was white with two male subjects and a female.

Criminal warrants will be sought against the Ubly teen, charging him with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and failing to report the accident.

The drivers of the other vehicles will not be charged because they are cooperating with the investigation, Jaskowski stated.

The boy was transported to Deckerville Community Hospital by private car. He was treated for minor injuries and released.

Officers received numerous tips from citizens during the investigation, as well as assistance from Sanilac County Central Dispatch and Bad Axe police.
