The second crash occurred six hours later on M-46 near Townline Road, two miles west of the city. Six people were also hurt in the later crash. Sheriff's deputies investigated the first collision at high noon in Custer Township. According to Deputy Russell Nowiski's accident report, Janet Wilkins, 45, of Sandusky was stopped in the north bound lane for a left turn onto Custer Road, when a second vehicle, driven by Roger Girard, 52, of Minden City stopped behind her. A third north bound vehicle driven by Jill Turbok, 46, of Deckerville was unable to stop and swerved around Girard and Wilkins, side-swiping their vehicles. Turbok'a 1993 Mercury Sable then collided head-on with a sound bound 1993 Chevrolet pickup driven by Brenda Thompson, 39, of Deckerville. The sheriff department report listed five persons who were transported to McKenzie Hospital in Sandusky. All five were treated and released, according to a hospital spokesman. The list includes drivers Girard, Turbok and Thompson, and two passengers in the Thompson truck, Matthew Thompson, 11, and Rochelle Thompson, 6, both of Deckerville. A sixth person also sought medical treatment on his own, according to Sgt. Charlene Washkevich. Deputies were assisted by Sandusky firemen, who used the Jaws of Life to free one of the victims, and state troopers from the Sandusky Post, and Sanilac EMS. Crash at 8:15 p.m. State Police Trooper John Daily responded to the two-car collision on M-46 in front of Open Door Missionary Church. Daily's investigation revealed that Dena Martindale, 31, of Bay City was west bound near Townline Road, when a second vehicle, driven by Virginia Ernst, 75, of Sandusky, pulled onto the highway into her path. Martindale struck the Ernst vehicle and ended up in the ditch on the south side of the highway. The Ernst vehicle remained on the road. Six people, including the drivers, were transported to McKenzie Hospital. Four of the injured were passengers with Martindale: Anthony Lincoln, 37, Heather Lincoln, 15, Bryan Bradley, 14, and Scott Klimaszewski, 10, all of Bay City. The injured were treated and released, with the exception of Klimaszewski. The 10-year-old was transferred to Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw where he was released on Friday. Daily was assisted by Trooper Andrew Pflaum, Sandusky police, fire and rescue, and Sanilac and Croswell EMS. |
