Shagena, 3200 relay team smash DHS records

REESE - A pair of school record-breaking performances helped lead the Deckerville boys track team to a third place finish at last Friday's Reese Invitational. The Eagles, who were the Div. II runners-up at the meet, finished with 62.5 points, trailing only Reese (98) and Frankenmuth (89). Marlette finished fifth with56 points.

Senior Bryan Shagena went better than three feet over his own personal mark in setting the record in the shot put with a winning toss of 53'1".

Coach Scott Long of the Eagles commented, "We knew he could pop it. He's been throwing 50' or so in practice. The day before, he was throwing 48-49 feet with a 16-pound shot."

The Eagle 3200 meter relay foursome of Chris Burgess, Steve Foster, Sean Hornby and Justin Stankiewicz put their team off to a good start at Reese by placing third in a school-record time of 8:43.7. Long said the same group broke the record a year ago and he was certainly expecting to see it happen again this year. However, the surprise, he said was that the group finished ahead of county rival Marlette, which placed fifth.

Senior Seth McVittie had the only other firsts for Deckerville, winning the long jump (19-7.75) and the 110 high hurdles (16.08).

Wes Messing, another senior, turned in his best meet of the season for the Eagles with a personal-best in the 400 dash (3rd, :52.99) and placing in the 200 (3rd, 24.22) and the long jump (5th, 19-4).

"I use to run him in the relays," explained Long on Messing's performances, "but those teams haven't been doing that well. I figured he'd do better for us in individual events."

Brothers Jeremy Kiley and Shawn Kiley finished second (10:13.46) and fourth (10:25.94), respectively, in the 3200 meter run for Marlette. Both were season-best times.

The Raiders also had a second in the 300 hurdles (43.54) from Austin Comment and a second in the discus (138-1) and a fourth in the shot (48-10) from Justin Marquardt.
