GTC trying to find flexibility in 2007-08 hoops schedule

The change of seasons in Michigan high school sports has caused many different scheduling ideas for next winters' boys and girls basketball programs.

The Greater Thumb Conference has come up with their own version after meeting last Wednesday to discuss several options for the 2007-08 school year.

The GTC adopted the proposal to play varsity, junior varsity and freshmen games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Girls will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays and boys will play on Wednesdays and Friday next season. Girls teams start one week earlier than boys and will play on Tuesday and Friday of that week.

However, schools will have options from there on out.

"The same schools will be playing each other on Thursday and Friday, but it would very simple for some schools, say Marlette and Sandusky, to schedule both varsity games on Friday," explained Norton Schramm, GTC Executive Director. He added that there could be separate games played on Saturday's, also. It all means, according to Schramm, that there are options that can be worked out by the member schools.

The Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday guideline could be flip-flopped the following season, but Schramm added, "It's possible it will reverse next year and we could make that decision. But, there's a lot of flexibility in the schedule right now. It's even possible we will make some changes during the season."

All in all, Schramm said adjustments will be made along the way and schedules for girls and boys sharing the same basketball seasons will work out in the long run.

There was not a unanimous vote on the base set-up of the schedule, said Schramm, but a two-thirds majority, required by the league, was surpassed.

The GTC also voted unanimously to accept Vassar as a member, beginning in the 2008-09 school year. Vassar, currently a member of the Tri-Valley Conference, will move into the West Division with Bad Axe, Bay City All Saints, Cass City, Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport, Reese and Unionville-Sebewaing. Brown City, Deckerville, Harbor Beach, Marlette, Mayville, Sandusky and Ubly comprise the East Division.
