Deckerville to interview six candidates for part-time superintendent



DECKERVILE -- Six candidates, including administrators in the Deckerville and Sandusky school districts, a former superintendent at Carsonville-Port Sanilac, and a Deckerville graduate will be interviewed for part-time superintendent.

The Deckerville Board of Education picked the six during a special meeting on Monday evening, from an original list of nine applicants. Interviews are scheduled this Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, at which time the board is expected to narrow the list to two finalists for second interviews next week. The board wants to name a new superintendent on June 2. The current and full-time superintendent, Alan Broughton, will retire on June 30.

The candidates are:

  • Don Schelke, Deckerville Junior and High School principal since 1996, and a former principal and teacher at Cass City Public Schools from 1973-1996.

  • Tricia Pawlowski, technology director at Deckerville Schools since 2001, and a teacher and technology director at Deckerville from 1996-2001.

  • Tom Lukshaitis, current director of state and federal programs and a former principal at Sandusky Community Schools where he's been employed for 32 years.

  • Chris Hammill, elementary principal in Utica who grew up in St. Clair County.

  • Alan Piwinski, superintendent of North Branch Schools since 2002, former superintendent at Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools from 1998-2002, and a teacher and principal at North Branch from 1972-1998.

  • Judy Foss, assistant superintendent at Eaton Rapids, and a graduate of Deckerville High School who owns a house in the Deckerville District.

    The interviews will be conducted in public in the high school library on the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, May 14 -- Schelke, 6 p.m.; Pawlowski, 7:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 15 -- Lukshaitis, 6 p.m.; Hammill, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 17 -- Piwinski, 9 a.m.; Foss, 10:30 a.m.
