Pioneers repeat as County golf champs

C-L's Filbeck takes medalist honors

LEXINGTON -- A year ago the Cros-Lex golf team pulled out a narrow one-stroke victory to claim the Sanilac County Tournament title at Huron Shores Golf Club.

The Pioneers defended that title last Tuesday, but in a more dominating fashion this time, shooting a 352 team score on the tough North Course at Lakeview Hills. Sandusky was a distant second with a 387 followed by Brown City 383, Marlette 432, and Deckerville 434.

"This was a good practice for us with the District coming up her in a couple of weeks," said Coach Dennis Fabbri of the Pioneers, who knew his team would be heavily favored to win the County crown this year. "It was nice to play on the North Course. I think the scores reflect the course somewhat." He added that the wind off Lake Huron was a factor. "It was cold and nasty."

Senior Brandon Filbeck led the Pioneers and all competitors with a low 18-hole round of 83. He carded a hot 39 on the front nine before settling into a 44 on the back.

"All year long," noted Fabbri, "my son (Nick Fabbri) and Brandon have been challenging for the top spot. As a senior, Brandon's just been all around his game. He's been consistent all of his career. He's a solid player."

Five of the Pioneers' six players earned a medal by finishing in the top seven. Nick Fabbri fired an 88, Ryan Fabbri, who had the low score on the back with a 41, finished with a 90, and Dennis Junga and Jim Grout shot 91-92, respectively. The lone Cros-Lex player to miss out on a medal, Nick Dupree, was just two strokes back at 94.

The other medal winners were Sandusky's Ethan Webster with an 89 and Brown City's Nathan North and Sandusky's Matt Grabitz, who tied for seventh with 93s.
