Pair charged in crime spree

Two Croswell men suspected of breaking into area businesses and churches have been bound over for trial in Sanilac County Circuit Court.

Troy Conely, 17, and Harry Golenberke, 20 waived their preliminary examinations in district court last Thursday on seven counts of breaking and entering a building and one count of conspiracy to break and enter. The two also face lesser charges of possession of burglar tools, three counts of larceny in a building and two counts of malicious destruction of property. Golenberke also faces an additional charge of resisting and obstructing a police officer.

They are scheduled for arraignments in circuit court on June 19.

The charges are the result of separate investigations by the sheriff department and Croswell police.

Sheriff's officers arrested Conely and Golenberke the night of April 7, after they allegedly broke into the J & D Market and nearby Bethel Missionary Church in Roseburg. The arrests followed a brief car and foot chase by officers, who recovered burglar tools and stolen merchandise from the suspect's vehicle.

Three of the breaking and entering charges concern the sheriff department's investigation of the market and church in Roseburg, as well as the Fellowship Bible Church on Peck Road in Flynn Township. Officers recovered cartons of cigarettes believed stolen from the market, and two laptop computers -- one from each church -- in the car.

Croswell police say evidence found at the scenes of four burglaries in the city will connect Conely and Golenberke to those crimes. The break--ins occurred at Product Assembly and B--2 Tape, both located in the same building on East Harrington Road, the Croswell Greenhouse on Davis Street, and the Cros--Lex Laundry and Tanning on Ward Street. Items stolen from the businesses include cash, stereo equipment and electric guitars, a metal detector and digital scales.

The men are also facing breaking and entering charges in St. Clair County.
