Lady Pioneers just miss going to State tennis finals

MT. CLEMENS -- A young Cros-Lex girls tennis team made a bid last Thursday, but fell a little short of qualifying for the State Finals. With 16 points, the Lady Pioneers tied for third with Richmond at the Division 3 Regional at Mt. Clemens. St. Clair won the title with 29 points and Marysville was next with 22. The top two teams plus any team with, at least, 18 points, advances to State.

"We needed a perfect day in order to qualify, but we don't always live in a perfect world," remarked C-L coach Howard Lippenga. "For the most part, though, the girls did very well and it's what I expected. We finished in third place at that Regional and I'm pretty happy with that."

The Lady Pioneers were led by the No. 3 doubles team of Meagan Semeyn and Tone Guevara, who advanced to the championship match in their flight. They defeated Clintondale (6-0, 6-0) and Richmond (6-3, 6--4) before falling to St. Clair (3-6, 2-6) in the championship match.

In six other flights, Cros--Lex players had first round byes and all won their quarterfinal matches before being eliminated in the semis.
