Lady Raiders clinch East title share

Outright crown still possible


UBLY - Knowing two wins would gain, at least, a share of another GTC East softball title, the Lady Raiders of Marlette went out a took care of business Monday, sweeping Ubly, 9-4 and 9-2. record and can still gain their second straight outright championship. Brown City, 6-2, knocked Mayville out of the title picture Monday with twin killings of the Wildcats, but the Lady Green Devils still must play at home this Thursday against a good Deckerville team and has yet to make-up a postponed doubleheader with Harbor Beach.

"We're really pleased, obviously," said Coach Harold Titus, who has guided the Lady We thought early that two losses would get a chunk of this thing. We played Sandusky, Mayville and Brown City early and got our two losses," he added. "The team played really well last night. The kids played well and got it done."

Junior Kayla Brown was one of the big sparks in the two wins over Ubly. She had three doubles and drove in three runs for the doubleheader.

"Kayla Brown hit two balls that would have been over the fence at our place. Ubly has no fences," noted Titus.

Senior Kayla Thompson, winding down a great four-year career on the varsity, went 3-for-5, with a double, in the opener and helped start a six-run first inning. Jenna Thompson, Jenna Lange and Kelsey Germain added two hits each. In the nightcap, Kayla Roberts had two singles and Lange and Katie Clark each contributed a double.

Junior hurler Caity King was the winner in both games, fanning a total of 22 Bearcat batters.

The Lady Raiders host Bad Axe in a GTC crossover doubleheader today (Wednesday before entering Div. 3 District play at Frankenmuth next week.
