Lady Pioneers settle for third in BWAC tennis meet

The Cros-Lex girls tennis team was looking for just one place higher last Tuesday, but had to settle for third at the season-ending BWAC league tournament held in Almont and Imlay City. Almont, the perennial power, won the BWAC title while Richmond edged out Cros-Lex for second.

"We could have played better," said C-L coach Howard Lippenga. "But, Richmond came in, held their own, and did what they needed to do."

The Lady Pioneers did have league champions in the doubles duo of senior Grace Greene and junior Shelby Rightenburg. They pulled out a very tight, three-set match in the finals with Richmond's Megan Russell and Tonia Gott, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Earlier they had defeated Armada (2-6, 6-3, 1-0) and upset Almont (6-3, 7-5) in the semis.

Lippenga commented the two Lady Pioneers, "They are an inexperienced team, but they did some right things. They showed that they could come through."

Cros-Lex had players reach the finals in two other flights.

In the No. 3 Singles, junior Lesley Sly, the third seed, won her first match over Armada (6-1, 6-2) and then upended the two seed from Richmond, 6-3, 6-0, in the semis. Sly lost to Almont's Claire Turvill, 1-6, 5-7, in the championship match.

"She played very well," Lippenga praised Sly. "She went three sets with the girl from Richmond earlier this season and let that slip away. But this time... all of sudden she kicked in and took care of business."

At No. 2 Doubles, seniors Sara Grout and Anna Delie won opening matches with Algonac (6-1, 6-0) and Armada (6-3, 7-5) before falling to Almont's Kristin Brinker/Melissa Wilber, 6-2, 6-3, in the championship match.

At No. 2 Singles, C-L's Sarah Furness won her first match over Imlay City (6-3, 6-2) before falling in the semis to Yale (1-6, 2-6).
