Baseball and softball districts fast approaching

Any number of Sanilac County teams could find success this week when they compete in the District baseball and softball tournaments.

District semifinals and finals for all those teams will be on either Friday or Saturday. The winners continue on into the post-season at the Regionals on Sat., June 7. The quarterfinals are next on Tues., June 10. The State Semifinals and Finals will be June 13-14 in Battle Creek.

Baseball
Division 2 at Yale
The Cros-Lex Pioneers (14-7), who have to get by Capac in a Pre-District game, find themselves in a tough District. Marysville awaits the Cros-Lex/Capac winner in the 10 a.m. semifinal. Imlay City, the BWAC champion, meets Yale, the BWAC runner-up, in the following semifinal. C-L was tied for third in the BWAC.
"If we can win against Capac, we'll have Marysville and they play in the tough MAC conference," noted Mike Holes, C-L coach. The Pioneers could look for some revenge if that happens. "We lost in the Districts last year against Marysville."
The Pioneers would also like another shot at Imlay City or Yale, who they lost to each by one run in the second half of BWAC play
Senior Justin Walls is Holes' No. 1 starter on the mound (5-2, 2.76 ERA). Cameron Barrett, Jason Myers and Cody Carlson, though, all have three wins.
Barrett, a junior, has had a great season at the plate, averaging .352 with a .535 slugging percentage. Zach Fabian leads the team in hitting with a .397 average and in RBI with 15.

Division 3 at Brown City
The host Green Devils will be trying to follow up their GTC East title with a District championship. They face a tough hurdle in the Pre-District, though, with Memphis, the NCTL South champion. The semifinals this Saturday will have theC/Capac winner taking on Almont at 10 a.m. and Marlette and Sandusky squaring off after that. The Green Devils (19-7) are the only team in the District with a winning record.

Division 4 at Kingston
The semifinals and finals at Kingston will take place this Friday. The Deckerville/Peck Pre-District winner will go against CPS in the 10 a.m. semifinal. Ubly matches up with Kingston in the next semi. Ubly, which saw, at least, a share of the GTC East title slip away late in the season, could be revved up to make amends. Deckerville, Peck and CPS, in the other bracket, though, have all shown they can be dangerous.

Softball
Division 2 at Yale
The Lady Pioneers of Cros-Lex have been playing their best softball of the season in the last few weeks. But, if they get by Capac in Pre-District play, they tangle with Marysville (25-3) in the 12:30 p.m. semifinal at Yale on Saturday. Imlay City and Yale are in the 10:30 a.m. semi.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Barth leads a young C-L squad that also starts three other ninth graders. The Vikings have three of the top players in the Blue Water Area in pitcher Lindsey Stocker and hitters Julianna Dobney and Lauren Davis.

Division 3 at Brown City
The Lady Green Devils of Brown City had at least three goals this season Ð win County, GTC East, and District titles. They are two-for-two and are favored for a third. BC had to face Capac of the BWAC in a Pre-District game. The winner meets Almont, the last place team in the BWAC this season, in the second semifinal on Saturday. In the other bracket, Sandusky battles rival Marlette to open the semis at 10 a.m.
Pitching and defense are always key. Brown City's Kristen Greene is not overpowering on the mound, but has great control. Marlette's Caitlin King brings the same style. Sandusky's Kelsey Paape, a freshman, is more of a power pitcher, but has been prone to some wildness. If all three pitchers are right, and get defensive help, just about anything can happen.

Division 4 at Kingston
The Lady Eagles of Deckerville played in the GTC East with nearly all Division 3 teams and played a lot of tight games. This District, which will be played on Friday, could be their turn to shine. The Lady Eagles were to face Peck in a Pre-District game on Tuesday. The winner collides with CPS in the second semifinal. At 10 a.m., in the opener, Kingston, the NCTL South champs, faces Memphis.
Junior Jessie Guza has been solid on the mound for Deckerville all season. Defensive support, though, has been a little up and down. Senior RaChelle Rich leads a decent hitting attack. Peck and CPS have had great hitting seasons, respectively, from Sarah Long and Jordan Alexander.
