Lady Devils stay alive in East softball

Can win title share today

BROWN CITY - After sweeping Mayville the week, the Brown City softball team is now in a position to claim a share of the GTC East championship today (Wednesday).

The Lady Green Devils moved to 8-2 in the division on Thursday by taking a pair from dangerous Deckerville, 2-1 and 13-0. If BC wins both games at Harbor Beach (make-up from May 16) today, it will share the title with Marlette (10-2), which has completed its GTC East season.

After starting the division season with a sweep against a good Sandusky team and a split with Marlette, the Lady Devils showed some flaws in the floor plan when they stumbled in league once to lowly Ubly and then to Sandusky in the County tournament semifinals. However, they pulled it back together with the sweep of Mayville, which was leading the East at the time, and of Deckerville.

"We've started playing smarter, especially defensively," noted Erin Snyder, BC's first-year varsity coach. "We're going for the outs we can get instead of forcing things. Plus, we struggled with our hitting early."

Snyder said a boost has come at the plate when former BC star pitcher Corie Greene, who started at Olivet College this season, has been throwing batting practice recently. Greene is hard thrower with a variety of pitches.

"Corie has pitched in practice and that has helped with our confidence," Snyder said. She added, though,"A lot of this now is the girls' desire to win league."

The Lady Green Devils needed a rally in the first game against Deckerville on Thursday They tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Lacey Diller singled and later scored on a two-out, bad hop grounder to second. In the bottom of the seventh, Jessica Miller singled and moved to third on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Sam Woodworth's sac bunt then allowed Miller to score the winning run.

Kristen Greene pitched for BC, allowing four hits, no walks and striking out nine.

Amanda Klaus suffered the tough defeat for the Lady Eagles, holding the Devils to just three singles. RaChelle Rich had a double for Deckerville.

In the nightcap, Brown City broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the fourth inning. The key hits there were a two-run single by Sandi Oligney and a two-run double by Diller. Greene and Liz Bartle each added two hits in the game.

Greene, again, was the winning pitcher with another four-hitter, with no walks and seven Ks.

Aleesha Smith had two of Deckerville's hits, both singles.

While Brown City, 21-7 overall, plays in the Div. 3 District at Sandusky this Friday, Deckerville will make a bid for the title at the Div 4 District at Port Hope, also on Friday.

Brown City 10, 17 Dryden 0, 1

A lot of Lady Green Devils contributed to the non-league wins over the Cardinals last Tuesday.

In the first game, Jamie Clark and Sandi Oligney each had a single and three RBI, Kayla Cain added a triple and Staci Morse, had a single and scored twice. Morse was also the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit.

In game two, Michelle Burgess drove in four runs and scored three others, Diller was 2-for-3 and Danyel Loren had an RBI single. Miller was the winning pitcher.
