The county road commission will not be doing as much mowing along the state highways this year.

Assistant Engineer-Manager Dale Stolicker reported the Michigan Department of Transportation is limiting funding for roadside mowing to one 12-foot wide pass along with clearing intersections on M-25, M-46, M-53 and M-90 due to budgetary constraints.

"They may do more in late summer depending on funding," stated Stolicker.

Usually the road commission makes three passes in many places along the highways.

"They did not cut our overall budget. They took it from mowing and transferred it to (road) surface and shoulder maintenance," added Engineer-Manager Robb Falls.

In other business:

  • Stolicker reported Pavement Recycling will begin pulverizing one mile of Ruth Road north of M-46 on June 9 and then move to Galbraith Line Road. The Ruth Road work should last 10 years, he said.

  • Stolicker reported Albrecht Sand & Gravel completed the resurfacing on Germania, Snay and Maple Grove roads before moving their operation for Huron County for a week. He said they should be back the first of June.

  • Falls noted that McDowell Construction completed joint repairs on Galbraith Line Bridge over the Black River.

"We planned to do Applegate Bridge over the Black River by now, (but) he needed to leave to do another project. He will be back late this summer," Falls said.

  • Falls reported he has received a quote from Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates for an evaluation of the Frenchline Bridge over Elk Creek. He also received information from a Chicago company, which he will contact before making a presentation.

Last fall the road commission posted weight restrictions on the bridge after an inspection showed it was bowing downward.

  • Accountant Joyce Hagan reported the county treasurer plans to disperse about $589,000 to cities and villages from the county road millage fund this week. The fund currently has $2,413,970.71 in it after the road commission paid Albrecht $313,997.

  • The board scheduled public hearings for July 9 for two road construction projects and one easement. They plan work on 1/2 mile of Patterson Road north of Cumber Road in Austin Township, 1/2 mile of Marton Road north of M-46 in Lamotte Township, and need an easement at the intersection of Charleston and Ruth roads in Delaware Township.
