Firemen from Elk Township and Sandusky responded to a house fire Monday morning south of the main corner in Peck. Elk Fire Chief Ernie Kilgus said flames were shooting out the downstairs windows as he drove by on the way to the fire hall to get his gear. Firefighters responded to the scene at 5590 Mill Street after a passerby called Sanilac County Central Dispatch at 7:38 a.m. Firemen "knocked down the flames within three minutes," reported Kilgus. The fire started in an electrical power strip in the living room, and the intense heat blew out windows downstairs. Fire damage was contained to the living room, however, there was smoke damage throughout the two-story structure. The Randy Herrick family that lives in the house left on vacation Saturday, said the chief. The fire was not considered suspicious. Firemen cleared the scene at 9:22 a.m.
