Marlette pool may open next week

MARLETTE - The public swimming pool may finally open early next week.

Councilman Stephen Quade reported that the pool's opening had been delayed due to problems beyond the holes in the liner.

"After Marlette Roofing fixed the liner, we were able to plug the drains and grates and we did not lose any water when we filled the pool. So at this point, the liner issue has been alleviated," Quade said. "Now having said that, when we removed the plugs the pool leaked as well as it ever had."

Quade went on to explain that cracks in the pipes to the pool were also causing leakage, while Councilman Bill Kmet showed the council and audience two sections of PVC piping with substantial cracks that had been taken out of the pool earlier in the day.

Over the next few days, Marlette DPW will be replacing the cracked sections of pipe, pouring cement to replace that which was broken to access the pipes, and Marlette Roofing will reattach the liner.

The council unanimously approved Quade's motion that the price of admission to the pool be lowered to $1 per day, while continuing the 50 cents Friday special but discontinuing the family pass.

Councilman Dennis Cargill wouldn't speculate whether the change in admission would negatively affect the pool's revenues, as the lower price may attract more attendance and balance out the difference.

Citizens and council members expressed gratitude for all of the work done in the past two weeks to keep the pool open.

"It definitely is a team effort and a lot was done in two weeks to get to the point we're at tonight," Cargill said. "I'm real pleased with the effort that has been put forward."
