Eleven races for township offices in primary

There will be 11 races for township offices in the August 5 Primary Election. All but one is among Republicans - the Democrat contest is in Austin Township.

There may be write-in candidates in a couple townships.
Only one person --Republican John Trowbridge --filed for the two four-year trustee position in Flynn Township. In Speaker Township only Republican Thomas Murray filed for one of the two the four-year trustee positions. No one filed for either of the two four-year Watertown Township trustee positions.
ARGYLE
There are three candidates for two four-year trustee positions.
Bert Sutherland and Steve Howard did not respond to the News questionnaire.
Jeromie Foote Personal: address -Snover, age -32, occuapation -process engineer. Qualifications: Learned to listen to both sides of discussion, ask questions and base decision on the facts as past supervisor and current employment Why are you running? "Being born and raised in Argyle Township, I have a strong interest in the continued improvement of the community. I see a need for young people to become involved in local government in order to become more familiar with the process for the future."
AUSTIN
There are two candidates competing for the supervisor's four-year term in August. The winner will face Republican Carrie Franzel in November.
Neither Leigh Langenburg nor Ed Sandro responded to the questionnaire.
DELAWARE
There are four candidates competing for two four-year trustee terms. The winner will face Democrat Keith Pierson in November.
Kevin Thompson Personal: address -Delaware Twp., age-52, occupation -farmer. Qualifications: Life-long resident. Self-employed. Married 30 years. 2 adult sons. Vice-President Minden-Deckerville local for several years. Charter member Delaware Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, assistant fire chief 7 years. Lakeside Prospect Beef 4-H Club leader. Palms St. Patrick Parish Council . Delaware Planning & Zoning Commission 2 years. Why are you running? "I would like to keep Delaware Township a progressive, safe place to life and raise a family."
Mark Klaus Personal: address --Palms; age --50; occupation --farmer. Qualifications: Life-long township resident. Knowledge of the operations and needs of the township. Why are you running? "My father is retiring from the board, which leaves an opening for representation in our area. The farmers need a voice and opinion on the board."
Allen Mach Personal: address -- Palms; age --60; occupation --retired. Qualifications: 2 terms on township planning committee. 36 years Sheet Metal Workers Local 292, foreman, general foreman, lead safety coordinator Have time and desire to contribute to future progress of township. Why are you running? "The changes the nation, state and county are going through, will affect the township. I believe I can assist in making these changes a positive force that will enhance what is already a quality township experience."
Brandon Trowhill did not respond to the questionnaire.
FORESTER Supervisor
There are two candidates for the four-year term of supervisor.
Julius Dudzinski Personal: Address -Carsonville, age -76, occupation -retired. Qualifications: "Qualified resident of legal age dutifully reacting to Forester's water line issues, Sanilac County's "tax till they drop" 3 millage renewal proposals with disguised Headlee Rollbacks on Aug. 4 Primary (fewer summer voters), county-imposed summer taxes." Why are you running? "Resolve shoreline townships' sewer needs with DEQ/Health Department, then continue water line. Reduce proposed $12,770/home pipeline assessment 75%, use taxable value proration, include exempt vacant development parcels."
Gary Daley did not return a questionnaire.
Trustees
The second race in the township is between three candidates for the two four-year trustee terms.
Daniel Dean Personal: address --Port Sanilac; age --48; occupation --Deckerville teacher; incumbent --2 years. Qualifications: Previous government experience includes CPS School Board member and county commissioner. Currently trustee and on township planning commission. Why are running? "To help guide the water project to completion in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible. Also, to help promote economic growth while preserving the quality of life that makes our area so desirable."
Stan Grabitz Personal: address -- Deckerville, age --50, occupation -Program Director/IT Manager, Sanilac Broadcasting Company Qualifications: Born and raised in Sanilac County. Forester Township resident since 1996. Former Forester Township business owner. Current Forester Township Planning Commission member. Good working relationship with government officials at local, state and federal level. Good communication skills Why are you running? "To represent the residents of Forester Township. Issues like the pending water project, controlled growth of both residential and recreational development and reduced revenue sharingÊwill require sound leadership to make Forester Township a great place to live, work and play."

GREENLEAF
There are three candidates for the two four-year trustee terms.
Vera Nicol Personal: address -Greenleaf Twp., age -78, occupation -homemaker. Qualifications: township trustee for 20 years in 70s & 80s. Past experience will help become familiar with township government, and will be able to do better job. Why are you running? "Having lived in Greenleaf Township all my life, and am very interested in our township, and being on the board again. Also to see what is new in township government, and what is best for our township."
Melvin Hoppe Personal: address --Cass City, age --69, occupation --retired. Qualifications: 35 years township resident. Married with 14 children & 23 grandchildren. Advanced master gardener. 35 years at Gemco Elect. * Patriot Sensors. Member Thumb Rose Society & Cass City Historical Society. Cass City High School graduate. Believes in fairness and equal rights of the people. Why are you running? "To help the township. To have a joint unity of the people."

MAPLE VALLEY
There are three candidates for the two four-year trustee terms.
Phillip Bartle Personal: address -Brown City, age-Ê51, occupation- Brown City DPW Supervisor, incumbent- 4 years. Qualifications: "Having lived in this area for over 50 years, I know the area, and people. I hold DEQ licensing so I know the environmental issues and what need to be done."
Tom Zyrowski Personal: address -Brown City, age -39, occupation -owner of Flatwork Concrete/part-time farmer. Qualifications: Maple Valley Twp Board of Review. Born and raised in Brown City. 15 years Brown City Fire Department, lieutenant and captain's positions. "Very community minded and like to help out where I can." Many committees over the years, including Sacred Heart Church Building Committee and Brown City Firemen's Fund Committee. Why are you running? "I can help make a difference in my community. If you want to make changes to benefit your surroundings, you have to give of yourself and your time. I want to help make the best decisions for my township and am dedicated to finding the best solutions."

SANILAC
Two people are competing for the treasurer's four-year term.
Arthur Schlichting Personal: address -Port Sanilac, age-45, occupation -assessor-appraiser/real estate, incumbent -8 years. Qualifications: 8 years as township treasurer. Saved township about $4,000 per year by doing own data processing and working with private print service. 4 years on village council. 4 years as DDA treasurer. 8 years village planning commission, 5 years certified assessor-level 3. Historical Society president, Troop 335 scoutmaster. School & church youth volunteer. Why are you running? "To continue to represent all the people of Sanilac Twp. To maintain an efficient and effective township government with an eye on raising the standard of living & quality of life in Sanilac Twp."
Charles Basler Personal: address --Carsonville, age --67, occupation --retired dairy farmer. Qualifications: MSU graduate. Military veteran. Former Bridgehampton Township supervisor. Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools Board 13 years. Currently serving on Sanilac Township Planning Commission and Board of Review. Why are you running? "I enjoy public service and now that I am retired, I think I have the time required to do the job as well as the interest in doing the job."
WASHINGTON Supervisor
Two people are competing for the four-year supervisor's term.
Joseph Sutherland Personal: address --Carsonville, age --63, occupation --elementary school principal. Qualifications: Sanilac County Library Board 25 years. Washington Township Planning Commission 10 years. Washington Township Board of Appeals 10 years. Active in church, civic and fraternal organizations. Township resident 32 years. Why are you running? "Washington Township provides many basic & important services to its residents such as roads, zoning, elections and fire protection. I want to ensure that these services are provided to all township residents equally and at reasonable cost."
Tim Gardner Personal: address --Carsonville; age --47; occupation --County building inspector. Qualifications: former business owner (Gardner Const. Inc.). Worked for engineering firm and road construction. Sat on Washington Township Board of Review. Why are you running? "I want to take a look at the budget; including road maintenance and cemetery, making adjustments where necessary. This should be a job that you want to be involved with township management. I believe my experience makes me the right candidate."
Trustees
Three people filed for the two four-year trustee positions.
Robert Smith, Mark Willis and Dennis Alexander did not respond to the questionnaire.
WORTH
Three people are competing for two four-year trustee terms.
Sharon Patton Personal: address -Lexington, age -64, occupation -retired business owner and teacher. Qualifications: Worth Zoning Board 7 plus years. Township trustee 1996-2004. Township Deputy clerk 2004-present. Family property owners since 1932. Lived in township since 1976. Why are you running? "Health and safety issues, relative to failing septic systems in subdivisions are most important. Work to conserve farmland and make sure the residents in highly populated areas are not burdened to support an expensive municipal system that would serve only one small area."
Douglas Soule Personal: address --Croswell; age --35; occupation --program manager. Qualifications: Raised on small farm in Worth Township. Member First United Methodist Church of Croswell. Eagle Scout. Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University. County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and chairman of Policy Development Committee. "Has the ability to work in challenging environment and is effective problem solver." Why are you running? "Worth is a unique township that enjoys residential and agricultural interests. I want to represent the township in a way that will benefit all of the residents. I would look forward to working with the board and residents to make the township a better place to live and work."
Leon McKay Personal: Woodbine St.; age --67; occupation --retired Ford Motor millwright. Qualifications: Bluewater Beach Homeowners Association Board; Parks and Beach Committee for over 20 years; Worth Township Planning Commission 3 years, 2 1/2 years as vice-chair. Township resident over 30 years. Work directly and indirectly with township board members. "Works well with people and understands township needs." Why are you running? "Because of my tenure on the planning commission and my experience, I feel I have a lot to offer the township as a trustee and welcome the chance to serve Worth Township."
