Deckeville Fire Chief Larry VanNorman said the two story home just east of Deckerville was fully engulfed when neighbors reported the fire about 4 a.m.

The house was vacant because Tim Heathcoat, his wife and their three children were on vacation.

With the assistance of the Carsonville and Port Sanilac fire departments, the fire was out by 10 a.m. The cause of the fire is still unknown. They managed to save the garage, but the family lost everything in their home.

VanNorman said his department called Sandusky Fireman Brad Harris, who is the Red Cross contact, before they left the scene.

"We found the them in Frankenmuth and they came home that morning," he stated.
