Cros-Lex girls romp to title in Little League Districts

EMMETT - Invoking the mercy rule in all four of their games, the Cros-Lex 9-10 Year Old girls softball team rolled to the Little League District #7 championship last week and will now move on to the State Finals at Wyoming, Michigan, to be held July 28-August 2.

Bob Young, one of the team's four coaches, said this is primarily the same C-L squad that has strung together successive titles.

"We've been coaching these girls three years, the same group. This is the third straight District we've won in a row with this group," said Young. "They are a pretty hard-working group. They're pretty talented."

In the final game on Saturday at Emmett, Cros-Lex mercied Marysville, 18-4, in four innings. Megan Guitar was the winning pitcher and also was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a triple. The biggest blast of the game came off the bat of Kylee Barrett, who smacked grand slam home run. Victoria Bender was 2-for-2 and also homered and Rachel Shadd added two singles and a double.

In Thursday's winners bracket final, Barrett threw a no-hitter in the 11-0 win over Marysville.

Cros-Lex opened the District with a 20-4 victory over St. Clair. Four different pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter. Barrett paced the batting attack with two singles, a double, and a triple and Abbey Bringard chipped in with two hits.

In the next game, C-L whipped Kimball Township, 32-3. Sadi Overland went 6-for-6 at the plate and belted a home run. Other top hitters in that contest were Bender (5-5), Guitar (4-4), and Shadd (4-5).

"Most of the kids on our team are 10," explained Young on his team's dominance in the tournament. "Our pitchers gave up just four hits in the four games."

Young said it will be a different story at State. "All of the teams there are good."

The Cros-Lex squad, though, did finish fifth at the State Finals a year ago. Sixteen teams will compete at Wyoming this year.
