Local News PUBLISHED:
"I would like to ask that all citations between 7 to 8 p.m. be put aside. If that kind of massive change is going to take place from previous Cruise Nights, then the people should know," Dixon said. "There was only one citation issued during Cruise Night," responded Police Chief Paul Cowley. " We warned everyone not to do burnouts. If the city allows burnouts to happen and someone gets hurt, I'm going to get sued and the city is going to get sued." Mayor Tom Lukshaitis sided with the chief. "We always have to error on the side of safety," Lukshaitis said. "If you want to do something about the ticket then send a letter to the prosecutor," Cowley explained. "I wouldn't recommend that council do that," said city Manager Lou LaPonsie. The issue was laid to rest by Councilman Keith Costine. "I don't think it's council's place to vote for breaking the law," Costine said. The council, Cowley and Dixon finally agreed that next year the rules for Cruise Night need to be better communicated. In other news two new crosswalks will be installed at M-46 and Moore Street and at the corner by Council member Rick Cook's house and the old Tubb's building. A blight ordinance and the means of enforcement and penalties for the violations were passed by council. Copies of the ordinance will be available for purchase or inspection at City Hall, 26 W. Speaker St. during regular business hours. |
