Mann sets record in Pirates' 50-6 win over Dryden

DRYDEN - Being on the road for the third straight week to start the season did not effect Michael Mann and the Peck Pirates Friday night.

Mann, a senior running back, broke the school's single-game rushing record with 285 yards in the Pirates' surprisingly easy 50-6 victory over previously unbeaten Dryden. Peck is now 2-0 in the NCTL and 3-0 overall.

In his 23 carries on the night, Mann scored five touchdowns on runs of 22, 20, 66, one and 53 yards, all in the first three quarters. His rushing total surpassed the old record set by Alan Bell in 1980. Bell is a current school board member at Peck

"(Mann) had a great night," remarked Rob Pouch, Pirates coach. "The holes were there for him. The line was making holes, and once he gets open he's tough to bring down. And, he has the ability to make people miss."

Mann's four first-half scores boosted Peck to a 36-6 lead. Sophomore Donell Hamilton broke a 89 yard kick-off return for the Pirates other TD in the opening half. Peck's final score came on a nine yard run from Aaron Rich.

Peck finished with 365 yards rushing and 18 passing while holding Dryden to a total of 156 yards.

Pouch added that the team effort against the Cardinals was the best to-date this season. "The boys stepped up and played about as well as they are capable of. We demand that they play four quarters of football, and they responded."

Defensively for the Pirates, senior Brian Jozlin had five tackles and nine assists.

Peck will remain on the road for one more week, taking on county-rival CPS (1-1, 1-2) this Friday night. The Pirates are hoping to stay unbeaten with a win against the Tigers to set up a crucial three-week span of games with NCTL contenders - Kingston, Memphis and North Huron.

"That's why we've got to start playing four quarters of football every week," noted Pouch. He added that his team cannot look past CPS. "From what I've seen, they're quick. They run a pretty good Wing-T and can mix in a passing game. They've got a lot of possibilities. Their record doesn't tell everything about what they have."
