CROSWELL - In what is expected to be another good race for the league title, the Cros-Lex girls volleyball team started it off right in BWAC play on Thursday. The Lady Pioneers hung on to top Algonac in five games, 16-25, 25-12, 25-22, 15-25, 17-15. Overall they are 3-4-1 on the season.

"This was not the best we can play," admitted Michelle Huber, first-year C-L head coach, "but we executed well in that last game. I saw a lot of things we need to work on, though."

Junior Sarah Furness helped lead the team to the win over the Muskrats by finishing with 16 service points, seven kills and 26 digs. Erin Lamb also had 16 points and led the team in kills with 14. Other top stats came from Aleece Force (9 kills, 18 digs), Cheyenne Renfroe (15 points), Brooke Johnston (8 points), and Kayla Sullivan (28 digs).

The Lady Pioneers met some rigid competition at the Grosse Pointe South Invitational on Saturday, managing just one tie in four matches. They split with Lakeshore and fell to Utica Eisenhower, Grosse Pointe South and Farmington Hills Mercy (eventual champion).

"We were in a really tough pool," said Huber. "We did the best we could, physically. We just need to improve our mental game. We had a lot of little mistakes.

"Overall, though, "she added, "we did a lot of things better."

No stats were available from the tournament.

Pioneer Invitational this Saturday.

Cros-Lex will host the Pioneer Invitational on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with pool play. Cros-Lex is in a pool with Sandusky, Ubly and Memphis. Port Huron, Deckerville, East Detroit and Bad Axe comprise the second pool.
