Lady Eagles upset hosts at Pioneer Inv.



CROSWELL - After finishing third out of four teams in pool play, the Deckerville volleyball team pulled a surprise in the playoff round at Saturday's Pioneer Invitational.

The Lady Eagles upended the host Lady Pioneers in the quarterfinals, 25-19, 26-28, 15-8. Going 2-3 on the day, Deckerville (3-7-1 overall) then lost in the semis to Bad Axe in three games, 18-25, 28-26, 10-15.

"For us being the smallest school there, it was a nice surprise," said Deckerville coach Carl Krumenacker on the win over Cros-Lex (6-6-1). "(Cros-Lex) made quite a few mistakes, but we've been a pretty good defensive team this year."

In pool play, Deckerville topped East Detroit (25-18, 25-16) and lost to Port Huron (23-25, 21-25) and Bad Axe (20-25, 23-25).

Senior hitter Ashley Szymanski led the Lady Eagles in digs with 51 and kills with 28. Dana Stolicker was 40-41 serving and added 43 digs and 15 kills. Other stat leaders were Jessie Guza (41-43 serving, 35 assists), Tricia Nichol (17 kills), and Katelyn Salowitz (26 digs).

Ubly defeated Bad Axe in the finals to win the tournament title.

Cros-Lex was 2-1 in its pool, defeating Sandusky (25-14, 25-14) and Memphis 25-20, 25-12) and falling to Ubly 25-21, 12-25, 9-15. Leading the Lady Pioneers were Cheyenne Renfroe (46 assists, 39 service points), Sarah Furness (34 points, 12 kills), Erin Lamb 30 kills), Aleece Force (41 points, 18 kills), and Jackie O'Connor (28 digs).

Sandusky went 0-4 on the day. The best performance came against Ubly, losing 9-25, 22-25. The Lady Redskins also lost to Memphis (13-25, 14-25) and later to Bad Axe in the quarters (11-25, 14-25). Stat leaders for Sandusky were Leanna Parrent (44 assists, 6 aces), Kate Ruggles (14 digs, 4 aces), and Jessica LaDuke, Shelby Bannister, and Kristen Dreyer (13 kills each).
