Off and running: United Way at 10.5%



The United Way of Sanilac County's effort to raise $185,000 this year has started with a very successful restaurant raffle. The raffle raised more than $6000, which brings the current total to $19,500 or 10.5% of the goal.

Janet Woronoff of Bay City won twelve dining experiences as the first place winner. Second place went to Cynthia Mooney of Port Sanilac, third place to C Kolascz of Port Sanilac, fourth place to Sharon Walters of Lexington, and fifth place to Julian Nowak of Lexington.

"We want to say a big thank you to all the restaurants who were willing to donate dining experiences," said Virg Strickler, president of the United Way.

The restaurants involved were Bud's Corner Cafˇ, and the Harrington Inn in Brown City; Beagio's, Eddie G's, and Llang's Garden in Marlette; A & W, Cadillac, Lakeview Hills, Steis's Village Inn, Flying Taco, and the Landing in Lexington.

In Sandusky, Big Boy, McDonalds, China Lee, Liberty Lanes, Maggie's, Main Street Cafˇ, and Pizza Hut participated. Participants in Port Sanilac were Huron Shores, Mary's Diner, Stone Lodge, VanCamp House, and Uri's Waterfront Dining. Deckerville restaurants were Champions, tCorner Cafˇ, Silver Tavern and Tracy's Breakfast Only.

"It's still early," said Kent France director of the United Way. "I am very pleased with the early campaign results. We have a partial total from Croswell-Lexington Schools, the money from the raffle, and the rest is from people who have responded to our mass mailing."

"Many long-time givers are included in the almost three hundred responses we have received," said Jean Morgan of Marlette, United Way board treasurer.

"There are also some new givers and many of our loyal supporters have increased their donations this year. All this additional and new money is being matched of a grant of $10,000 from Citizens First Foundation. We are very thankful for their support once again this year."

Donations to the United Way may be sent to the United Way of Sanilac County, P.O. Box 245, Lexington, MI 48450. Agencies funded by United Way dollars are the Alzheimer's Association, American Red Cross, Blue Water Center for Independent Living, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Catholic Family Services, Goodwill, the Harbor, H.E.L.P., Inc., Kid's Connection, Lakeshore Legal Aid, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, Mid Thumb Habitat for Humanity, Personal growth Center, Safe Horizons, Salvation Army, Child Abuse Prevention Council, Literacy Council, 4-H Council, S.A.V.E., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Foster Grandparent Program, and United Hospice Services.
