In addition, the board has elected Michelle Mueller chairman. She is the dean of workforce development at St. Clair Community College, and was appointed to the board in May 2007.

The Fort Gratiot resident is a Sanilac County native and members of her family are fifth generation Croswell residents. Her father-in-law was superintendent of Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools for years.

"It is a way of giving back to the people who helped me along the way," Mueller stated.

Through her contacts in Lansing, Mueller plans to bring a lot of workforce development ideas and information back to the table in Sanilac County.

She replaces interim chairman and Brown City Manager Clint Holmes, who has been interim chair since mid-2006. He is still vice-chairman.

In other business, the board:

  • Set up a committee to come up with a five-year strategic plan, which will include a detailed plan for 2009. Business Retention and Community Services Coordinator Jim Rutkowski said they will assist the county Board of Commissioners where needed and help improve infrastructure in the county. The SEA can help with everything from coordinating water or sewer projects to helping obtain funding.

  • Heard Rutkowski's report of his productive meeting with Brownfield Authority Chair Cheryl Collins.
