GTC East boys soccer title bid looming for Raiders?

The Marlette boys soccer team could be going after a share of the GTC East title this Thursday afternoon.

The Red Raiders, 5-1 in the division, will host unbeaten Harbor Beach (6-0) this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for what could be, at least, a piece of the championship. Marlette needed to finish a suspended East match with Sandusky earlier this week while the Pirates were to play at Sandusky in a regularly scheduled match yesterday (Tuesday). Marlette has previously won division titles in 2004 and 2005.

Since falling to Harbor Beach, 1-0, in double overtime, in late September, the Raiders have clipped off three straight East victories, including this past Thursday's 5-0 shutout of Caseville..

"This was probably the best all-around game that we played all year," expressed Dave Hayden, Marlette coach. "The defense really stepped up and we had constant pressure up front.

"The boys are really starting to work together as a team," he added. "I cannot emphasize enough that we have to improve our set plays for future games and districts."

Senior Ryan Hinkle and junior Ryan Sabo each booted in a pair of goals and freshman Brent Speer added one in the win over Caseville. Marlette put 28 shots on goal for the game.

The Raiders (6-5-2 overall) had two more goals from Sabo, the team's leading scorer, in Tuesday's win. Austin Korte and Justin Barr also found the back of the net. Ben Taylor had nine saves.
