Shea's run at MTBA record a few pins short

Del Shea's bid to regain his old Mid-Thumb Bowling Association record came up about one shot short last Friday night.

Shea, of Sandusky, one of the prominent bowlers in the area, ruled the lanes in the Friday Night Mixed League at Liberty Lanes with an 858 series, which included bookend 300 games. The series was his second best in the association, missing his old record series of 865. That mark, though, was eclipsed earlier this fall by Jake Bressman's 866, also rolled on the Friday night league at Liberty.

Shea's second game of 258 was tarnished only by three spares, all nine pin counts. He went a little high in the first frame and left a four-pin. He buried shots in the fifth and 10th (second ball) but left a pin each time.

"Those were two good shots. I left the 10 (in the fifth) and a nine pin in the 10th," explained Shea.

He added that he doesn't really think about regaining his association record.

"That (the record) doesn't matter to me," said Shea. He did note, though, "I knew when I left that nine pin, I couldn't get it."

The former Saginaw Valley State University bowler and three-time Sanilac County News Bowler of the Year Tournament champion, averages around 250 on Friday night's and says he has been close to perfection a number of times this season. "It's been there all year. I've been getting the front eight, front nine a lot."

Shea had two 300s in his 865 series. Overall in his bowling career, he has 25 - 300 games and 25 - 800 series.
