Lady Eagles rise up for CPS Inv. title

CARSONVILLE-PORT SANILAC - For the second tournament in a row, the Deckerville volleyball team rose to the occasion with some quality play. After finishing second to Marlette at the Sanilac County Volleyball Tournament the week before, the Lady Eagles turned around to win the CPS Invitational this past Saturday.

After going 3-0-1 in pool play, Deckerville eliminated Peck in the semifinals, 25-9, 25-15, and then swept North Huron, 25-16, 25-19, in the championship match at CPS. North Huron had beaten Caseville (25-18, 25-22) in the other semifinal contest.

"We played in control," said Coach Carl Krumenacker of the Lady Eagles. "We didn't over-hit the ball and played a more controlled game. That seemed to help us."

With junior Dana Stolicker, a good, all-around player, out with an ankle injury, Krumenacker brought up a pair of sophomores - Toni Klaus and Kelsey McConnachie - to help in the rotation, and they came through.

"They came up and gave us little more spiking power," said Krumenacker.

Senior Ashley Szymanski also used her steady play to lead the Lady Eagles. She finished with 24 kills and 40 digs and was 32 of 34 serving.

Plenty of others chipped in: Nicole York with 22 digs; Jessie Guza with 29-30 serving and 22 assists; Kelsey Smith with 22 assists; Katelyn Salowitz with 18 digs; Aleesha Smith 14 kills; and, Sarah Thayer 13 kills.

In pool play, Deckerville, now 15-19-2 overall, defeated Kingston (17-15), Sandusky (15-13, 15-6) and Caseville 15-8, 15-5) and split with Akron-Fairgrove (12-15, 15-10).

The Lady Pirates of Peck turned in a solid showing. They advanced out of pool play by topping Port Hope (15-5, 15-8) and North Huron (15-12, 15-11) and splitting with Owen-Gage (4-15, 15-9) and CPS (15-10, 10-15).

"The girls are really excited and I was really happy," said Coach Trisha Bussey of Peck. "We had some outstanding play ands held it together all day."

The Lady Pirates, playing with just eight girls, had 13 points, six aces, six kills and 11 digs on the day from senior Sarah Long. Tonya McCann had 15 points and three aces, Savannah Wilcox finished with 13 aces and eight digs, Mary Snider added four kills and seven blocks, Erin Navarro had four kills, and Kelsey Schell totaled 69 sets.

The host Lady Tigers were 0-2-2 in their pool, splitting with Peck and Port Hope (17-15, 13-15) and dropping matches to North Huron (9-15, 13-15) and Owen-Gage 13-15, 11-15).

"Communication is what brought us down," noted CPS coach Jen Abbott. "When they talk, they play so much better, and they know this, but for some reason they couldn't get it done."

Amanda Maher was steady in service with 17 points and also had six digs for the Lady Tigers. Also adding to the stats were: Adalis Sifuentes nine points; Melissa Fraser seven points, 17 digs; Patricia Thoms seven points,; Dawn Albrecht five kills, six blocks; and Jordan Alexander four kills, six digs.

Sandusky went 0-4 in pool play, losing to Deckerville, Akron-Fairgrove, Kingston and Caseville. Sophomore Katelyn Ruggles had 15 digs and 16 serve receptions, Kelsey Moore added 45 sets, Shelby Bannister led in kills with five, and Kristin Dreyer had five blocks.
