One thousand kills in a season. It has never happened in Michigan high school volleyball history. That is, until last Thursday night when Marlette's Jenna Lange recorded her 1,000th kill in the Class C District match with Sandusky.
The 6'1" senior middle-hitter, following District play, now has 1,055 for the season and will add to that total in the Regionals this week for a new state record. The old record was 986.
Lange, who will be playing at Oakland University next season, said she was not aware of her kill numbers until Coach Fred McDowell mentioned it to her.
"Coach told me that I was close, and then I read in a paper that I just needed two," Lange said. What was a bigger surprise, was when McDowell called a time-out after her 1,000th and she was presented with a poster and a ball to commemorate the occasion.
"I was really surprised," she smiled. "I had no clue."
Coach McDowell said Lange's feat is well-deserved.
"I've had real good middle hitters before, and some with real big numbers. But, (Jenna) is just that exceptional. That's not to take away from players like Crystal Ciurla or Jessica McRobbie, but Jenna just fits. She's just in a comfortable situation."
Lange and junior Amber Wood are the main hitters for Marlette. An All-State selection, Lange is an easy choice to get plenty of important feeds in the front row.
She has personal goals of trying to be a better blocker and to always hit the ball hard, but she gives credit to her teammates. "Without others making perfect passes and without Josie (Volz) giving perfect sets, this wouldn't happen."
She added, "Definitely team goals are more important, though."
The next team goal is winning a Regional.
