Mann nabs Wendy's award

PECK - It was a nice honor for Michael Mann to be named a State Finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. It became bigger and better Monday when the Peck High School senior was selected as Michigan's Wendy's Heisman winner on the boys' side.

A senior boy and girl from each school in each state, plus the District of Columbia, are first chosen for the local award. All of those then get considered for a finalist in their respective state. Overall, students are judged on their academic achievements, community and school service, and athletic accomplishments.

Mann, who owns a 3.9 GPA, and recently concluded an outstanding football season for the Pirates, will be grouped with other state winners on a Regional basis. Then one male and one female from each of the six Heisman Regions will be named a National Finalist.

In conjunction with the collegiate Heisman award, the Wendy's High School Heisman finalists will be invited to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities in New York City on Dec. 7-9. ESPN2 will feature all 12 National Finalists during the Wendy's High School Heisman Awards Ceremony, which is airs Dec. 9.

"I really wanted to win this (State Award)," said Mann. "When I knew about, it was something I was hoping for. It's a nice award."

Mann joins Peck alumni Matt Sheridan as a State winner in the Wendy's award program. Sheridan was chosen in 2001.

"This is a big honor for him," added Peck Athletic Director Paula Davidson on Mann's selection. "And, it's a big honor for the school."

Wendy's will announce the National Finalists on Nov. 21st.
