Final baby for McKenzie OB!

George Kile James III has the distinction of being the last baby to arrive in McKenzie Memorial Hospital's obstetrics unit. Baby George was born Wednesday, Nov. 14 to Heather James of Marlette. The hospital closed the OB ward Nov. 15, the result of increasing costs, decreasing reimbursement rate, and the declining birth rate in Sanilac County. The doctor who delivered baby James, Dr. Robert Mutch, has also ended his obstetric practice. Sharon Carman, registered nurse and OB supervisor holds the newborn. Carman has worked in McKenzie's OB unit her entire 38-yearcareer, and will remain on the nursing staff. "This has been a journey of love for me. It has given me a tremendous amount of pride and joy to bring new life into the world," said Carman. For the record, George Kile James was born at 1:14 p.m., weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces, and was 16.6 inches long.
