The 14-year-old, whose name has not been released, apparently was standing in the roadway, on M-90 and Claridge Street, when struck by a pickup truck Sunday around 5:40 p.m., said Michigan State Police from the Sandusky Post.

Clarence Gunningham, 46, was arrested at the scene and taken to jail, after a breath test indicated a blood-alcohol level of .11%, exceeding the legal limit of .8%. He was also driving on a suspended driver's license, according to police.

Gunningham, who was not injured in the crash, appeared before the district court magistrate in Sandusky for arraignment Monday morning. He was charged with one felony, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury; and four misdemeanors: controlled substance Ð possession of marijuana; driving while licenses suspended; alcohol Ð open intoxicant in vehicle; and controlled substance- use of marijuana.

Gunningham demanded a preliminary examination, which has been tentatively set for Dec. 3 at 2 p.m.

Bond was continued at $20,000 or 10%.

The preliminary investigation indicated the 1996 Chevy pickup was not swerving or speeding prior to the accident. The truck "went down the road", then turned around and returned to the accident scene, said Sgt. Doug Rogers.

Reports that the youth may have been on a bicycle or skateboard have not been substantiated.

Passing motorists stopped to render aid to the injured teen, who was transported to Port Huron Hospital with broken bones, internal injuries and possible head injuries.

He was transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit overnight. He regained consciousness during the night and was in stable condition Monday morning, according to Rogers.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Croswell police, fire department and EMS, Sanilac County sheriff's officers and state police crash investigators from Lapeer and district headquarters in Saginaw.
