While Corby, Palleschi and Fabian were all State qualifiers last season, Torrez has emerged after a summer of extensive training and hard work. The 171 pounder is still unbeaten in the young season. "Right now, he's 7-0," remarked Coach Lilly. "He'll get to see some competition at Caro this weekend. We'll see what he's made of." Fabian (160) is the only one of the four that has a loss so far, but that came to a quality wrestler from Lapeer East earlier last week. "Zach had four actual matches (one void) Saturday and he pinned everybody but the kid from (Warren Fitzgerald). He was a pretty good wrestler." Corby just missed winning a State title last year losing in the Div. 3 State Finals at 145 pounds. Saturday he won his only two matches rather easily. "The other three teams voided all around him," noted Lilly. Palleschi, meanwhile, is having an impressive start. Lilly commented, "He's really looking good right now at 215. We bumped him up to heavyweight a couple of times, too, on Saturday." Two other Pioneer wrestlers turned in sound outings. Shane DuRussel went 4-1 at 130 pounds and Jacob Tanner posted the same record at 145/152. Both are seniors. Fitzgerald captured the team title on the day by going 5-0. Port Huron was second (4-1) and Cass City was third (3-2). The Pioneers defeated Bridgeport 57-18 and Lutheran North 60-24. They lost to Fitzgerald 45-22, Cass City 42-34, and Port Huron 42-36. Before going to the Caro Invitational on Saturday, the Pioneers host North Branch, Port Huron Northern and Yale in a quadrangular meet tonight (Wednesday). |
