Redskins turn up defense in boys opener to top Yale

SANDUSKY Ð After a sluggish first quarter, the Sandusky Redskins fired up the defense and had some key play off the bench in the second quarter on the way to a 58-40 triumph over Yale. It was the opening night of the boys basketball season.

The Redskins trailed, 12-7, after one period, but then took control of the game.

"We started slow and allowed (Yale) to dictate the tempo, offensively and defensively," noted Kurt Long, Sandusky coach. "We started to sub a little in the second quarter and Tom Loding came in to get a key rebound and a couple of points. Then, Ty Loding hit a shot."

The Redskins took over from that point and led 25-17 at the break. The lead extended to 16, 43-27, in the third quarter.

"Overall, we did a very nice job with defensive pressure," added Long.

Several players contributed in the win. Senior Derek Neumayer paced the scoring with 12 points while Ty Loding finished with 10, Tom Loding netted eight, and Sam Stevens chipped in with seven. Andrew Fetting helped ignite the defense with four steals and Matt Grabitz had seven points and nine rebounds.
