Sports PUBLISHED:
Sanson, a four-time State qualifier, captured first at 145 pounds at Byron for the fourth straight year, winning all three of his matches on the day. Marlette coach Cal Hayward liked what he saw from the rest of team. The Raiders posted four second-place finishes in the varsity competition and added a first and two seconds in the JV tournament. "I was pleased - very much," said Coach Hayward. "Even the kids I put into the JV matches did well. They got some experience, wrestled well and did the moves we told them to do" In the varsity meet, brothers Travis (112) and Marcus Noble (119) each took a second place. "I was quite impressed with (Travis), he had his kid (in the finals) on his back in the second period. He was a kid that is ranked at No. 4 at 103," said Hayward. He also noted that Marcus Noble, seeded fifth, upset the 3rd and 2nd seeds before getting pinned in the finals by his teammate, Jon Hayward. Also taking seconds for Marlette were Justin Harms (103) and Tristan Armstrong (140). Medals were also won by Joel Swenson (3rd, 145), and Adam Powell (4th, 160). Two others placing for Brown City were Marcos McDonald (3rd, 160) and Jorden Tunis (4th, 140). Millington won the team title with 218.5 points, followed by Byron (194.5) and Marlette (171.5). Brown City was sixth (68.5). In non-league matches tonight (Wednesday), Marlette visits Almont in a triangular meet, which includes Armada, and Brown City travels to Lapeer East. This Saturday, BC competes in the Marlette Invitational. |
